MAS Operated 16 Flights To Evacuate 5,382 Malaysian

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines System operated 16 flights over 12 days from Feb 2 to evacuate 5,382 Malaysians from Egypt.

MAS Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sri Tengku Azmil Zahruddin said in a statement Monday that the Malaysians were evacuated to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia before being flown home.

He said the evacuation was a success due to the collaborative efforts of the Malaysian government, private sector and foreign agencies.

Tengku Azmil commended the team at MAS for answering the government's call to evacuate as many Malaysians out of Cairo as quickly and safely as possible.

"The team spirit at MAS was overwhelming and focused on ensuring the smooth evacuation of our fellow Malaysians," he said.

In the interest of safety, Tengku Azmil said, MAS codeshare flights with Egypt Air to Cairo have been suspended until March 27.

He said customers on MAS codeshare service to and from Cairo via Egypt Air on MH9148 and MH9149 are offered a waiver on cancellation and change fees until Feb 28 for travel until June 30.

All changes must be done at MAS ticket offices.

Customers are also eligible to get a refund on the unused portion of their ticket, subject to terms and conditions, Tengku Azmil said.
